WiPay + Shopify: The Complete Setup Guide
Connect your Shopify store to local Caribbean payments. This guide walks you through installing the WiFy Plugin, connecting it to WiPay, running a full test order, and going live with confidence.
Who this is for: Shopify merchants in the Caribbean who want to accept cards in local currency (TTD, JMD, BBD, etc.) or USD using WiPay.
Read time: ~8 minutes
Outcome: A working checkout that redirects customers to WiPay and syncs paid orders back to Shopify.
How the flow works (plain English)
- Customer checks out on your Shopify store.
- They're redirected to WiPay's secure, hosted payment page (HPP) to pay.
- On success, WiPay sends the result back to your store.
- The order is marked Paid in Shopify and you fulfill as usual. Funds settle to your WiPay account based on WiPay's payout schedule.
Security bonus: card data never touches your Shopify theme or the WiFy Plugin—processing happens entirely on WiPay's infrastructure.
Prerequisites
- A Shopify store (any paid plan).
- A WiPay business account with the credentials you'll use (test and/or live).
- WiFy Plugin (7-day free trial available).
- Decide your store currency (e.g., TTD vs USD). You can display price hints however you like, but checkout itself happens in one currency when using a third-party gateway.
Tip: If most of your buyers are local, match your store currency to your market (e.g., TTD for Trinidad). If you sell across borders or in tourism-heavy niches, USD can be practical. You can always revisit this later.
Step 1 — Install the WiFy Plugin
- Go to thewifyplugin.com/getting-started and click Install on your store.
- You'll be redirected to sign up and pay with Stripe.
- After sign up, you'll be taken to the WiFy Plugin setup screen where you can configure WiPay.
Step 2 — Pick the right store currency
- Go to Settings → Store details → Store currency.
- Choose the currency you intend to charge at checkout (e.g., TTD).
- Click Save.
Why this matters: With third-party gateways like WiPay, checkout runs in one currency. Displaying prices in other currencies is fine for marketing, but the actual charge currency is your store currency.
Step 3 — Run an end-to-end test order (Test Mode)
- Create a test product (e.g., "WiPay Test" for $1 or the local equivalent).
- From your storefront, add it to cart and go to Checkout.
- Choose Checkout with WiPay as the payment option.
- You'll be redirected to WiPay's payment page.
- Complete the payment; you should be redirected back to your store's Order Status page.
- In Orders, confirm the order shows as Paid (or Authorized/Captured depending on configuration).
If you don't see the order status update, see the Troubleshooting section for "Order stays unpaid after successful payment."
Operations 101 (after you're live)
- Payouts/settlement: Handled by WiPay into your WiPay balance/bank per their schedule. The WiFy Plugin does not hold funds.
- Refunds: You will need to refund in WiPay's dashboard and mark it in Shopify. Be sure to document this process for your team.
- Disputes/chargebacks: These come via the card networks and your acquiring route; gather evidence (order details, delivery proof, communication) and follow WiPay's instructions.
Troubleshooting
Payment method doesn't appear at checkout
- Have you changed your theme recently? Please contact us to resolve the issue.
- Make sure the store currency aligns with what your WiPay account supports.
- Confirm that your subscription is active.
- Clear caching apps and test in an incognito window.
"Currency not supported" or amounts look off
- Double-check Settings → Store details → Store currency.
- Verify your WiPay account supports that currency.
- Remove currency-conversion apps that might try to alter the checkout amount.
Best-practice setup for higher conversion
- Consistent currency signaling: Product page, cart, and checkout should all clearly show the same currency symbol and code.
- Receipts: Use Shopify's standard order confirmation emails/SMS.
- Post-purchase page: Thank customers and set expectations ("You'll receive your order confirmation in a few minutes").
FAQ
What cards and methods can my customers use?
This depends on your WiPay region and settings. Commonly: Visa/Mastercard debit/credit. AMEX is not supported.
Can I accept USD and local currency?
Usually yes, if your WiPay account supports both. Your store currency controls the checkout currency in Shopify when using third-party gateways.
Do I need to be PCI compliant?
Card entry happens on WiPay's hosted page, which reduces your scope. You still must follow basic security practices (HTTPS, staff permissions, no card data in support tickets, etc.).
How fast do I get paid?
Payout timing is set by WiPay. Log into your WiPay dashboard to see live balances and settlement schedules.
Does the WiFy Plugin charge extra transaction fees?
The plugin itself doesn't add per-transaction fees; you pay WiPay's standard processing fees.
